Dear Ft. McClellan Vet:
Terrific Research, and job well done. I was at Ft. McClellan in 1968. My records are missing. I searched for them out of St. Petersburg, Florida. They were reported "Missing". I specifically wanted to find an incident with Sgt. Melson in my Ft. McClellan record. Those records are gone. I went into the Army very healthy and (after only 4 months) at Ft. McClellan, was sick the rest of my life. I have xrays, scans and medical reports, showing Thyroiditis, Enlarged liver and Spleen. I also had abnormal Adrenaline studies (Cortisol). Did the VA help me----absolutely not ! They actually left me to suffer, and almost die. All outside care was done by a University doctor who taught at Chicago Hospital and Clinics. I keep those old records very secure and safe. When I was at McClellan, and almost at the end of Basic Training. I began to experience numbness in my toes. Then I developed a cool burn of my skin. Later, I was to collapse with complete muscle weakness. My eyes were red, and I could not put in my contact lenses. Years later, my lower tear ducts had to be closed, so that I could have more tears in my eyes. Why did I look for my records? Because Sgt. Melson herself took care of me in her own quarters when I collapsed. She drove me to the Base Doctor in her own jeep. She stayed with me, and asked the doctor, "Are you sure she is OK ?" Obviously, I wasn't ! I was so weak, I had trouble swallowing, and the Sgt. took me to her own quarters, and helped me eat. I could barely swallow soup. I had difficulty swallowing my own saliva, let alone soup ! I could do every exercise with even doing over 100 sit ups. After becoming ill, I could hardly do any exercises. However, because the Sgt. knew I was terribly sick from something, they passed me from Basic, without requiring me to fully pass the Physical fitness test, required by the Army. By the way---I was tops in my class, and everyone was so impressed by my outstanding achievements, that I was asked to go to a Non-Commissioned Officer training unit. I declined. Later, I went to Fort Sam Houston for AIT. It was there, that I began to have other health issues, including chronic sore throats, abdominal pain, lethargy and more muscle weakness, and beginning female problems. By the time I got to Fitzsimmons in Denver, I was complaining of being tired, and noticed easy bruising to my skin. At times, I was so tired and achey (muscles and general body aches), that I could not think straight. But I was labelled a "Psyche Case", instead of doctors aiding me. A Malingerer, was one doctors opinion. But when I finally saw a young army Psychiatris (Captain Kaplan), He realized I had other problems than just wanting to go home, and help my sister, because my mother was terribly ill. I could have gotten out on what is known as a "Hardship" case. I did see the Captain and she denied helping me to get home to my sister and very sick mother. I tried the JAG officer, and could not get an appointment. I was virtually ignored by the Army for any kind of help for me, or my family. What happened after that, was "Bedlam" and possibly more experimentation, in which I was terribly sickened more (with wrong treatments), and became a victim of Medical Torture. I don't know how I survived Denver and Fitzsimmons. The cruelty of me and others, will never be forgotten. I am witness to an influx of women, that were very ill, but being treated on a psyche ward, as "Head Cases". I watched women being heavily drugged (including myself) and multiple ECT treatments---and the women, being made into zombies. One woman, may have not survived the drugs, ECT, and very poor care from staff. Intimidation was abundant, and the cruelty I observed, is to this day alarming. My concern in the overall picture for every woman from Ft. McClellan (and future soldiers and veterans) is that, they will receive wrong treatments, for real medical conditions, that the Army has yet to be open and honest about. HOW MANY HAVE SUFFERED AND DIED FROM DECEIT AND LIES FROM DoD, The Military, and of course, THE U.S. VA ADMINISTRATION. Ft. REPLY TO JAN: There is NO advocacy effort for any AO claim at all regarding Fort McClellan Alabama. All of the legislative statusing on Fort McClellan is filed under it's own FORUM above this one towards the top of the page. Other chat websites are idiots and oblivion to what is going on with the Fort McClellan legislation and you CANNOT take rumors at face value. The Fort McClellan legislation is completely valid and legitimate, it has been 5 years in the making, Capitol Hill is very much talking to us, and the legislation absolutely WILL go forward. The WAC veterans are NOT the only population that served at Fort McClellan, and on that note, this is where some of the delay and extra work comes into play on the legislative effort. So stay tuned because it is very much coming, but NOT in this "womens forum" however. Thanks Sue Frasier, VEV 1970 Army Signal Corps national activist/protester staff Blogger, VFJ |
