| In setting up the newly redefined discussion of the town-wide contamination zone at Anniston, Alabama near the former federal army base of Fort McClellan, I am bringing to you a collection of maps which we are holding which sets up the boundaries of the contamination area in various directions showing all 4 contributing sources. Note that the maps we are holding of Fort McClellan itself are oversized and do not represent very well using this Forum display, so the base was limited to maps of the former Army Chemical Corps which occupied the entire south end of the base from Baltzell Gate to Summerall Gate. The LINK below is to the on line sales of a recent book that has been published about the Monsanto portion of the contamination zone, mostly limited to the South Landfill that was discovered near the former segregated district of Anniston under the old Jim Crow South known as Hobson City. That district sits directly on a mountain known as Coldwater Mountain. It just so happens that I know that area well and went back to photograph one of the parks in the area that about 10 of us post-service veterans used to use right on the contamination grounds which are described in the book. The book is clearly a novel about the activist characters in the area right at the moment that the Monsanto PCB contamination was under class action trial. Keep in mind that the entire town was taken over by the Monsanto PCB contamination, but this book only speaks to the area known as South Landfill which is documented in many CDC and EPA reports which we are holding. The South Landfill was not licensed and was buried illegally right on the skirts of town making up the residential area of the Hobson City district so the book novel hovers almost exclusively around that part of the Anniston story. It's recommended that you obtain the book at your local library first and then decide if you want to buy it. Also included are maps of the contamination area of Anniston Army Depot. The Depot sits at the opposite end of Hwy. 202 from Monsanto. While Monsanto was dumping into Snow Creek, the Depot was dumping into Dry Creek and both of those creeks were then dumping into Choccolocco Creek at the south end of town. This is a contamination zone of Epic proportions, but then after all of that, the EPA never posted any hazard signs; never evacuated anyone, never closed or relocated businesses in the area; never issued quarrentines; and least of all, never warned the base commanders at Fort McClellan so that all of us troops on active duty at the time could get a heads up and medical physicals who were stationed there. The Anniston contamination zone is a classic story of EPA and CDC bungling on a scale only seen at any other time in comparison to the disaster at New Orleans. They just sat around in their offices making up these maps and issuing reports to each other and there was NOBODY designated to go help and deal with the PEOPLE who were implicated in the contamination. To this day, the town almost seems unaware that they have been put through the largest single regional contamination site in U.S. history, with the exception of those properties who are still listing on the local real estate market as "in pcb cleanup" under their for-sale listings. It stands to reason that if the local residents have to work so hard to be told anything about the truth of this contamination zone, then those of us troops who were effected by it don't stand a chance in hell to get any easy rights or patient recognition out of the matter. Also included in the displays below, is a copy of the VA diagram chart showing the legislative process that we are now snared into and caught up in at the VA. Veterans are required to get an "act of congress" to obtain patient recognition at the VA for their hazardous exposure disabilities. This is the same exact process that the Gulf War Veterans are pursuing now for the 5th straight time, and it is the process that we are pursuing for Fort McClellan. Note that the Institute of Medicine AND the Veterans Disability Benefits Commission (VDBC) have both condemnded this process at the VA in their report to Congress. But it seems that the Congress is too, too, too DUMB to comprehend the chart's meaning, that "Stakeholders" actually means "military veteran medical patients". In other words, they are torturing medical patients to "lobby" all of Capitol Hill in Washington for an "act of Congress" so they can then be "recognized" for VA disability statusing as a patient group suffering hazardous exposure diseases. So we are caught in a process from hell on the VA side, which is then followed by the Dumb leading the Stupid on Capitol Hill who just doesn't get it. Stakeholders are the medical patients so remember that when you see the diagram of VA process below.
