The 14th Army WAC Band circa. 1960's by McClellanVet (created on )Gallery | Comments
The 14th Army WAC Band was another
fixture unit at Fort McClellan, Ala. and
was inadvertently decommissioned
along with the Womens Army Corps.
in 1977. This was the same year that
Monsanto Corp. was court ordered to
halt all manufacturing production for
PCB's in the Anniston area.

I was briefly stationed at the 14th
myself for a couple of months after
boot camp before heading on out
to the Army Signal Corps school
for greater horizons. So I know this
unit well from the inside out. It
was the prestigious Icon unit of
the corps and it did demonstration
performances all over the Anniston
region during its existance.

I have recovered a couple of shots
of the unit from various places on
the internet, and colorized this version
to bring out the details since
photography back in the day was
not developed as well as it is now.

I am hoping to eventually get the
time to make a trip to the womens
museum to extract premium SCANS
for digital manipulation.

This shot is believed to be in the
proximity of 1961 because it matches
other shots found which were dated.

Many of the women in the band
were Lifers. This was really not a
unit of transients by any definition.
Many stayed until they retired from
the Army altogether. They owned
property in the Anniston area, and
some of the best military house
parties I have ever been to came
from this crowd of jokesters and
goodtimers.

Talented, smart, funny, and totally
on top of their military game for
precision. They had it all and it
was truly the Army's loss the day
they were decommissioned.
