The West Point Tribute Collection by McClellanVet (created on )Gallery | Comments
As indicated in the other Forum, I took
a ship cruise over the 4th holiday which
first stopped at West Point academy and
then headed into New York City harbor
for the Macy's fireworks.

I was fighting a couple of things on
these: one was the weather and the
other was the rocking of the boat from
all the other some 1,000 boats who
entered the harbor at the same time
we did.

It rained just as we could start to see
the city shoreline, then it stopped. Then
15 minutes before the fireworks it rained
again. So there is a lot of cloud cover
in some of these but it only shows the
density of humidity and fog we were under
and consider the fact that some of these
shots have actually been clarified some
by computer and even with that they
are still quite misty.

There is no better way to see fireworks
on the 4th of July than to have the
Statue of Liberty directly behind you
as everything is happening. Doing the
4th from the water really rocks.

Anyhow, the Plebes were just starting
their very first day in class just as we
arrived. Using a high powered zoomer
I managed to pick up some gems of them
as they struggled with their deer in the
headlights look. They were issued
some shoulder bags, because West Point
is an engineering school and they would
be issued all kinds of protractors and
compasses and what not for their math
classes once inside.

The buildings at West Point are an odd
mix of outright historic and also the very
new. They have as many as 6 gymnasiums
in one building now.

The main marching field used to be
where the Revolutionary War era students
used to set up outdoor Bivouac and
practice horsemanship and what not.
This West Point location used to have
a whole other history prior to the
school being established so it really
is the place to be on the 4th of July.

I can tell you that by 10:30am, even
though it was a holiday, the line
of charter buses to come in for tours
were backed up all the way out into
the road because the parking lot was
not large enough to hold all of them.
Our own tour group took an entire
4 buses of people and our tour was
completely sold out.

There is a sizeable football field to play
some of the Navy games. In the YouTube
Links I give to you below, you will
see references to Go Army, Sink Navy.
That is their sports cliche and not to be
confused with branch of service rivalry.

They now have nearly 5,000 students per
year on the campus, however there are
a lot of burdens put on their backs once
they are accepted into the school. They
hardly get any time off at all, one month
per year, not all at the same time.

The mess hall has 6 minutes to get all
of the food on the table for them and
then they have 20 minutes to eat exactly.

They do have licensed identity logo wear
all over the internet and not just at
their own Gift Shop. We walked across the
street from the base and there were
stores up and down the street who
had shirts and jackets from West Point.
The name of the hosting town there
is Highland Falls so if you decide to go
there for a tour and overnight mini
vacation, most of the hotels are all
along the main street coming into the
base, some even within walking distance.

I wanted to make a tribute page for them
here. They have to endure 4 full years
of school plus then another 8 years
of active duty after they are commissioned.
So hats off and here here for the students
of West Point. They attend this college
free but then have to return thereafter
to continue teaching the classes in rotation.

This location site dates all the way
back to the days of George Washington
everybody and it is the oldest continuously
running military school in the country.

The store sites I have included below,
also has a nice womens selection of
shirts also for those who want to buy
for the next Veterans Day holiday.
