I've been on the VA web site for a while now and I can't find any info on how to go about adding my mother on as my dependent. I don't know the criteria for doing so either.

My mother lives with me and my daughter and does not contribute to our living expenses. She makes much less than $800/mo on social security, hardly enough to pay her own expenses, and had breast cancer last year with another biopsy scheduled next week. (ugh). Right now we're living on my 100% unemployability rating, and that's barely enough to cover everything, especially considering I can't work anymore.

My uncle, (a vietnam vet), was able to get his mother listed at his dependent, and she didn't live with him (she lived next door). She was not declared incompetent or any of that crap either, and lived on her own successfully for quite a while - though now she's in a nursing home.

Anyway, does anyone have any idea how I go about applying for this, and/or what the requirements are? Searching the VA website is useless.

Thanks for any help!
Laurie

To get your mother on your claim, call 1-800-827-1000 and request it be done. Within 2-3 weeks you will receive confirmation from the VA that you have filed a claim for dependency. With this there will be additional forms to fill out. You can jumpstart this process by obtaining a 21-686c (dependency information) form and having it ready to mail to the VA. You will also likely need to supply income information for your mother.

Remember, she must be below the poverty level to be added as a dependent.
